NATO Secretary General, Mark Rutte, stated that allies will closely observe how rebel leaders ensure a peaceful transfer of power and protect civilians in Syria.
'This is a moment of joy, but also uncertainty for the people of Syria and this region. We hope for a peaceful transfer of power and an inclusive political process in Syria. We will closely watch how rebel leaders act during this transfer. They must ensure the rule of law, protect civilians, and respect religious minorities,' said the NATO chief, as reported by Ukrinform.
He noted that Russia and Iran were the biggest supporters of Assad's regime, but they abandoned him when he became unnecessary.
'Russia and Iran were among the main supporters of Assad's regime, and they bear responsibility for the crimes committed against the people of Syria. They also proved to be unreliable partners who abandoned Assad when he became unnecessary,' Rutte stated.
