The situation at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant is fragile: IAEA assesses reactor status.

The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Mariano Grossi, stated during the opening of the IAEA Board of Governors in Vienna that due to the war between Russia and Ukraine, the reactors at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant cannot be restarted. He explained that in a situation where nuclear safety is at risk due to the conflict, none of the six reactors at the ZNPP can be reactivated.
'According to the agency's recommendations, no reactor should be restarted while the war threatens nuclear safety and security at the station', - emphasized Grossi.
Grossi highlighted that many elements of the nuclear safety system at the ZNPP are damaged or destroyed, making the station very vulnerable. There is also a risk of disruption to the power supply at the station due to its captivity.
IAEA is working to ensure the safety of nuclear sources and to reconstruct the energy sector in Ukraine
In the context of reconstructing the energy sector in Ukraine, the International Atomic Energy Agency is also focusing on ensuring the safety of radioactive sources. A conference on reconstruction in Rome is planned to outline specific steps that the IAEA will take to improve the situation regarding nuclear safety in Ukraine.
In connection with the war between Russia and Ukraine, the Director General of the IAEA reported that the reactors at the Zaporizhzhia NPP cannot be turned on due to the threat to nuclear safety. The International Agency is also working to ensure the safety of nuclear sources and to reconstruct the energy sector in Ukraine.
