Ukrainians are being sold counterfeit dollars and euros: which denominations are most often counterfeited.

The increase in the number of counterfeit foreign banknotes in 2024 has caused outrage among financial experts and citizens of Ukraine. According to the National Bank of the country, most of the counterfeit foreign currencies withdrawn from circulation were US dollars.
Counterfeit banknotes can easily be spotted. For example, the printing quality and color may be poor on counterfeits. Also, counterfeits often lack watermarks or other security features that are characteristic of original banknotes. Furthermore, the texture of original banknotes has unique properties that may be absent in counterfeits.
- The first sign - printing quality and color. Counterfeit banknotes may have a blurry or unclear pattern, as well as incorrect saturation of shades.
- The second sign - the absence of security features. The watermark on genuine banknotes is present and visible from both sides, whereas on counterfeits it may be poorly reproduced.
- The third sign - paper texture. Original banknotes are printed on special paper with cotton fibers, while counterfeit banknotes may have a smooth or overly soft texture.
The National Bank recommends citizens who have doubts about the authenticity of banknotes to contact banking institutions for examination. Research is free of charge, and genuine banknotes are returned to the owner regardless of their condition. Counterfeit banknotes are confiscated without compensation.
Counterfeit foreign banknotes are becoming a serious problem for the financial system of Ukraine. The National Bank urges citizens to be cautious and check money before conducting transactions. It is also important to promptly report counterfeit findings to law enforcement to prevent the spread of fake money. The National Bank actively monitors the situation and does everything possible to reduce the impact of counterfeit banknotes on the country's economy.
The Ukrainian National Bank confirmed the increase in counterfeit foreign banknotes in 2024, particularly US dollars. Citizens are advised to be attentive and check cash before conducting transactions, as well as to report counterfeit findings properly to prevent the spread of counterfeit money. The National Bank plans to continue monitoring and taking measures to prevent the impact of counterfeit banknotes on the financial stability of the country.
