Serviceman Valeriy Zelensky from the 53rd Separate Mechanized Brigade, who spent three years in Russian captivity, returned to Ukraine on May 25, 2025. But on June 16, the heart of the 57-year-old man stopped due to the tortures he endured, his daughter Valeriya told 'Suspilne'.

Valeriy Zelensky, a chemist by profession, met his future wife in the Luhansk region. After working at the 'Azot' factory, he became a field investigator and worked there for six years, dreaming of a job in the police since childhood. Possessing the potential for better positions, he rose through the military ranks from soldier to sergeant.

During the offensive, when volunteers were sought for the assault, Valeriy decided to join. Despite the promises of Ukrainian law enforcement, he had to fall into captivity to Russian forces, which shocked his family. For three years, they had no information about his fate until they received a message on social media and a letter from an address in the basement.

After May 25, a large-scale prisoner exchange took place in Ukraine, but Valeriy was exchanged earlier than anticipated, suffering torture that led to his tragic death on June 16.

Valeriy Zelensky's return to Ukraine and his tragic death after a long captivity became an unspeakable burden for his family and loved ones. This story reflects the heavy trials that Ukrainian soldiers have to endure in the conflict zone in the east of the country.
